Hybrid/Fitness

There is a reality in the cycling industry that many brands refuse to recognize.  While it may be exciting and interesting to push innovations in mountain and road biking as these are the competitive ends of the sport, the reality is that 90% of all riders never ride 50 miles or wonder into the woods.  As a result, most of these consumers do not need a mountain bike or a road bike, they need a hybrid.  We primarily carry Trek bicycles in the hybrid department, as they are the only major brand that treats hybrids as seriously as we believe they should be treated.

There are three types of hybrids, fitness hybrids, comfort hybrids, and comfort bikes.  They are actually each tailored for a specific type of riding and these types are as follows:

Comfort Bikes - Comfort bikes are extremely upright and extremely comfortable bikes to ride.  They put riders in a position where they are nearly completely upright and have very little pressure on their backs.  Comfort bikes typically have suspension forks and also have 26 inch mountain style tires.  These characteristics allow for a ride that is slanted towards comfort and away for performance relative to other hybrids. The Trek models of comfort bikes include the Navigator 1.0, Navigator 2.0, and Navigator 3.0.  They are most suited for 5-10 mile rides around the neighborhood and down the Katy Trail.  If you are looking to do more distance than this, consider one of the other types of hybrids.

Comfort Hybrids - When compared to comfort bikes, comfort hybrids are slightly quicker and more performance oriented.  Comfort hybrids will always have a narrower tire mounted on a larger 700c wheel.  This allows for less rolling resistance but sacrifices a small amount of ride quality.  Excluding entry level models, comfort hybrids typically have suspension forks.  These will soak up bumps in the trail wherever you are riding but will cost some amount of speed and responsiveness.  Trek produces numerous comfort hybrids, the main line being the 7000 series.  These varieties of hybrids are generally neutral on both performance and comfort parameters.

Fitness Hybrids - Fitness hybrids are the most performance oriented of the three varieties of hybrids.  None of them utilize suspension forks and they often use higher quality, lighter weight aluminum than the other types of hybrids.  Many describe fitness hybrids as comfortable road bikes.  When compared to the other styles of hybrids, fitness hybrids feel very quick and responsive as you pedal them.  They do sacrifice slightly on comfort but still sit you in a much more comfortable position than a typical mountain bike or road bike.  Trek fitness hybrids are made up of the FX line and are available with a wide variety of component options.

Whatever your style of riding, Trek produces a style of hybrid that will feel perfectly tailored to your needs.  Come in and talk to one of our specialists about your riding goals and we will get you matched up to your perfect bike.
